Mt. Biking: Sproughton to Felixstowe Wind Direction: N/a Wind Stength: 6kts Surf / Sea State: Na Air Temperature: Warm Sea Temperature: Na Weather: Sunny Max Speed: Average 11 Distance Covered: 40 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
After cancelling our MH weekend trip due to unforeseen circumstances, the
sun definitely activated my cold blood. Foiling was on at best location
around here Bradfield on the River Stour. Saw the messages but the forecast
didn't stack up to lifting my 100+ kg!
With so many toys thought SUP but decided on a 50 miles bike ride trip on
my Focus Cayo road bike. Since Covid my bike riding has greatly improved
but still can't get out regular enough and as usual preparation which is
key to long distance non stop riding was poor today due to last minute
decision. The nutrition was the normal 2 bars but lost one after 20 miles
although this time I remembered 2 bottles. Took some "expert" u tube advise
to run my Schwalbes marathon tyres at low pressure 85psi instead of 100.
That was a huge error and clearly bllcks! It killed my time and was hard
work. Trip was Sproughton Claydon Tuddenham Bucklesham Levington and back
and to be honest was bang on my best after 10 at 15 mph average with HR 120
which is a little high for the planned trip. Had the only bar after 20
miles and finished 1 bottle so knew I would never get to 50 miles! So
change tact to 40 mls and switched route slightly. Using a brilliant little
device the Garmin Explore computer I could follow any route on the
unfamiliar back roads between Tuddenham and Rushmere. In fact the voice
stats feeding into the helmet speaker made it really easy to pace the whole
ride, which used to be soul destroying last year in the last 10 miles. The
gadget keeps ambition real for sure! Traffic was low on the back roads and
a cooling breeze past the Levington ship which was packed outside was nice.
This area has 2 downhills and 3 stiff ups which I like to challenge. I hit
the first 2 ok but with 180 HR alarms screaming in my head (15 over my
calculated max) I knew I had to walk the last one after missing the low
gear change. I was now feeling the pace as my sugar level dropped with no
supplies left. Levington was v sunny and boats were hardly moving so made
the right call. Pace had almost gone and at 25 miles I dropped from 13 mph
average to 11. Riding to music albums is great but missed the Tuddenham to
Claydon turn arrow on the gizmo and the voice message so had to use the
Ipswich bypass which was very busy with cars and fumes at 4.30. Re routed
towards Westerfield which was peaceful until 5 roadies came sweeping by gee
ing me up. I did speed up to their 20+ mph for a laugh for 50 mtrs then
shouted adios. ..way too good for me. 40 miles took 3 hrs 18 mins (11 mph
average) with average HR 121 (too high norm 110) and burnt 1467 cals which
was ok. I use an expensive Garmin chest HRM pro monitor that links nicely
to apps and the explore computer and I was incredibly lucky as I arrived
home it somehow unhooked and my neighbour just managed to avoid trashing
it! Nice ride in the sun great conditions and felt ok after a couple of
pain killers.
